Phoenix NVC Learning and Practice Group Facilitated by Patricia Ewanski and Joseph Redwood-Martinez

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a communication framework developed by psychologist Marshall Rosenberg, PhD. The NVC framework provides a set of communication tools that enable us to achieve:

— A habit of responding rather than reacting

– Greater levels of connection and mutual understanding

– Clarity when we experience anger, resentment, fear, etc

– A state of openness, possibility

We are a group committed to learning and practicing Nonviolent Communication together. Each meetup will consist of practical exercises focused on a specific topic.

Topic: Listening + Guessing Feelings and Needs

Date: Friday, May 3, 6:45 – 8:45 pm,

Sign-up: https://www.meetup.com/phxnvc/events/260372022/

Location: Near Curry Rd and Scottsdale Rd in north Tempe. Address to be provided upon sign-up.

Start getting into practicing the art (not science) of hearing needs behind what someone is expressing.

In the previous 2 meetups, we listened for details and then we listened for feelings. Both can be challenging in their own rights. This time, we try to take the listening further…hearing what need they have underneath their communication.

I’d love it for you to attend. People who are new to NVC: please start reading or listening to anything by Marshall Rosenberg. He also has many YouTube videos if you haven’t yet bought his main book called Nonviolent Communication, A Language of Life.

Please bring $1 to add to the collection to help Joseph upkeep this meetup group.

Topic: NVC Q&A

Date: Saturday, May 25, 6:30 – 8:30

Hello NVC Practitioners,

Let’s have an open Q&A meetup where you can bring any questions you may have about NVC and we can discuss. You can bring personal scenarios that you’d like help with. You can bring general questions. Or you can just come and listen to what everyone else has to say. I may have a few questions myself.

Oh and I should say this. I am no NVC guru. Everyone’s input for the answers will be welcome and encouraged.

Last but not least, if you have questions that you don’t feel comfortable bringing up in front of a group, please let me know and we can arrange a separate time to meet individually. I’d love to help you if I can.

I’ll send out my address once you sign up and before the actual meeting. It will be held in my apartment which is near Scottsdale Road and Curry Road in north Tempe.

Topic: What is Empathy?

Date: Monday, May 27, 6:45 – 8:45 pm,

Sign-up: https://www.meetup.com/phxnvc/events/260372169/

Location: Near Curry Rd and Scottsdale Rd in north Tempe. Address to be provided upon sign-up.

What is empathy. Is it the same as sympathy? As compassion? If not, what are the differences? How do you know you are showing empathy toward another? Where do we get off track?

**Please take the time to research on your own a little bit before the discussion.**

I’d love it for you to attend. People who are new to NVC: please start reading or listening to anything by Marshall Rosenberg. He also has many YouTube videos if you haven’t yet bought his main book called Nonviolent Communication, A Language of Life.

Topic: YES, and

Date: Friday, June 1, 6:45-8:45 pm,

Sign-up: https://www.meetup.com/phxnvc/events/260373191/

Location: Near Curry Rd and Scottsdale Rd in north Tempe. Address to be provided upon sign-up.

This meetup will be FUN! I’d like to borrow from the field of Improv Comedy. We will be doing “Yes, and….” exercises where we practice accepting what another participant has stated (“yes”) and then expand on that line of thinking (“and”). I’ve only done it a few times. It was challenging but a great experience. I hope you will join me!

Topic: Meditation Walk / Hike

Friday, June 7, 7-8:30

I will be cross posting this with my hiking meetup group (Hiking Hikers Hiking or “Triple H”).

What I’d like to do is take us through a small portion of Papago Park. There will be some trail walking on rocks/dirt and up a few hills. There will also be parts of the trail that will be paved. Be prepared for anything.

I will give some short instructions before the hike. The hike will be silent. We will not be talking to each other.

Part of NVC is mindfulness and we will practice that.

Of course hot temps are in the forecast so bring plenty of water, a hat, possibly a headlamp or flashlight, and your willingness to experiment.

We will meet in the parking lot of the AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park, 1300 N College Ave, Tempe, AZ 85281.

Topic: NVC Requests

Date: Saturday, June 8, 6:45 – 8:45

Location: Near Curry Rd and Scottsdale Rd in north Tempe. Address to be provided upon sign-up.

Requests are what I personally have the hardest time with in NVC. So…let’s practice them! I’ll have some instruction for exercises but we’ll of course have plenty of discourse around this as well.

I’ll send out my address once you sign up and before the actual meeting. It will be held in my apartment which is near Scottsdale Road and Curry Road in north Tempe.
