Phoenix NVC Learning and Practice Group Facilitated by Patricia Ewanski and Joseph Redwood-Martinez

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a communication framework developed by psychologist Marshall Rosenberg, PhD. The NVC framework provides a set of communication tools that enable us to achieve:

— A habit of responding rather than reacting

– Greater levels of connection and mutual understanding

– Clarity when we experience anger, resentment, fear, etc

– A state of openness, possibility

We are a group committed to learning and practicing Nonviolent Communication together. Each meetup will consist of practical exercises focused on a specific topic.

Topic: Listening

Date: Friday, April 12, 7-9 pm,

Location: Near Curry Rd and Scottsdale Rd in north Tempe. Address to be provided upon sign-up.

Practice just listening to others. No 4-part process this time around. Depending on how many people want to spend a Friday evening doing this, we will either do this as a group or break into pairs to practice listening. The task will be simple. One person will share their feelings and/or thoughts on a specific topic (which I will provide). They will say a few sentences (flexible 5-10) and the other person will practice listening for details, thoughts, feelings, and repeat back to the other person what they heard. This does a few things: gives us practice listening to the other person without worrying about our own response or analysis, gives us practice listening for details, gives the other person an experience of being heard and how that feels.

I’d love it for you to attend. People who are new to NVC: please start reading anything by Marshall Rosenberg. He also has many YouTube videos if you haven’t yet bought his main book.

Topic: Listening + Guessing Feelings

Date: Friday, April 19, 6:45 – 8:45 pm,

Practice listening for and guessing feelings. As you may know if you practice NVC, the practice doesn’t say we have to guess right. It just says we have to guess. What that tells the other person is that we are trying to understand their feelings and that we care.

Topic: Listening + Guessing Feelings and Needs

Start getting into practicing the art (not science) of hearing needs behind what someone is expressing.

In the previous 2 meetups, we listened for details and then we listened for feelings. Both can be challenging in their own rights. This time, we try to take the listening further…hearing what need they have underneath their communication.

Sign-up: https://www.meetup.com/phxnvc/events/260372169/

What is empathy. Is it the same as sympathy? As compassion? If not, what are the differences? How do you know you are showing empathy toward another? Where do we get off track?

**Please take the time to research on your own a little bit before the discussion.**

This meetup will be FUN! I’d like to borrow from the field of Improv Comedy. We will be doing “Yes, and….” exercises where we practice accepting what another participant has stated (“yes”) and then expand on that line of thinking (“and”). I’ve only done it a few times. It was challenging but a great experience. I hope you will join me!
